Strange Devotions

This series explores the quiet tension between the absurd and the sacred. Familiar creatures and objects are caught in moments of surreal significance—playful, eerie, and strangely reverent. Expressionist textures and dreamlike compositions reveal a world where logic dissolves, instinct becomes ritual, and symbolism slips into satire. Here, devotion wears unexpected faces.

Three cats are gathered in a ritualistic stance around a single beer bottle, as if it were an object of worship. The scene is drenched in intense, fiery oranges and reds, casting a glow that feels both unsettling and reverent. The contrasting deep shadows lend a sense of mystery, while the exaggerated, almost reverent expressions on the cats’ faces add an absurd, comic element to the scene. The juxtaposition of their devotion to a mundane object—a bottle of beer—questions belief, obsession, and the rituals we create around seemingly trivial things. The vivid, almost too-warm colors heighten the tension, making the absurdity feel strangely intense, as though these creatures are caught in the throes of a fervent, yet misplaced, faith. This painting is a personal homage to my father and his cats.

The Gourmet Reversal depicts a surprising twist, where a penguin, with fork and knife in hand, prepares to eat a shark. The penguin’s composed demeanor contrasts sharply with the absurdity of the situation, flipping the natural order of predator and prey. Vivid colors and soft textures add to the surreal atmosphere, making this piece both humorous and unsettling. The painting challenges traditional ideas of power, control, and our relationship with the natural world, inviting a deeper reflection on these themes.
